Twitter’s Gone, and That’s Probably Fine

I’ve noticed my screen time in Ivory has been way up recently, and to be completely honest with you, that’s probably a good thing. I do have Twitter on my phone–but it’s not on my home screen, and I’m not signed in anymore. I probably should have deleted the app, but I have fond memories of the site.

I met a few of my closest friends on there–I follow a lot of interesting people, too. A lot haven’t moved on from that cesspool. There’s still something so captivating about it. But that’s not always a good thing. Fear-mongering and misinformation gets shoved down your throat like your doctor giving you a strep test. It’s a disgusting place and I’ve noticed people in my life have started to fall for the lies. It’s terrifying.

In 2022, MacStories Editor-in-Chief Federico Viticci exited the platform for Mastodon (and later Bluesky, when that took off). At the same time, his Managing Editor and business partner John Voorhees did the same. Frankly, I wish I had sooner too. I’ve very much fallen in love with Mastodon and Bluesky. Everything feels open. Bluesky specifically has felt more like Old Twitter than ever, especially more recently.

I don’t think I’ll ever go back to Twitter, at least not full-time. Maybe occasionally to see if my friends who haven’t moved are up to anything cool (they probably are). But as far as I’m concerned, the Twitter I knew is gone and the man behind it is such a truly awful person (like, truly awful) that I don’t wish to support the platform anymore.

The Twitter of 2025 no longer aligns with the Twitter I was once proud to be part of: a place for all to belong. It is now, instead, a place for hate to fester and drive the algorithm, headed by one man who is spewing it daily on his feed (just one example), while having no clue what he’s talking about.

I have always been a believer that hate has no place in our society. So, I know where I’d rather spend my time.
