Retail giant Amazon today made an offer to acquire TikTok just days ahead of when TikTok must be sold off or face a ban, reports The New York Times. Unspecified participants involved in the TikTok talks “do not appear to be taking Amazon’s bid seriously,” and multiple interested parties are scrambling to plead their cases for a TikTok purchase.
This is actually insane. Whether or not it goes through remains to be seen, but something important to note, the ban is technically in effect right now. It’s just that Attorney General Pam Bondi isn’t enforcing it at President Trump’s direction. It’s a complex mess, and there are questions about the President’s Executive Order even being legal right now.
Regardless, the ban takes effect on Saturday. We’ll see what happens. I wholly doubt China will allow the algorithm to go with it regardless of what the US gives in return, but crazier things have certainly happened in our Nation’s history.
